The U.S. Army Flag - History from the Beginning
The flag of the United States Army has a rich and storied history, dating back to the founding of the United States. Here is a brief overview of its development:
1. Revolutionary War Era (1775-1783):
During the American Revolution, the Continental Army, the precursor to the United States Army, adopted various flags to represent their cause. One of the earliest examples was a flag featuring a snake and the slogan "Don't Tread on Me" that represented the colonies' desire for independence.
2. Early National Flag (1784-1818):
After the Revolutionary War, the United States Army adopted a flag that featured 13 alternating red and white stripes to represent the original colonies. In the upper left corner, known as the canton, were 13 white stars on a blue background, representing the Union.
3. War of 1812 and Beyond (1818-1956):
Following the War of 1812, the United States Army modified its flag design. In 1818, a law was passed stating that, on the Fourth of July following any new state's admission to the Union, a new star would be added to the flag on the following Independence Day.
